  • Need to fix ntdll.dll

This problem started several months ago (see my other topic "run program in admin. mode without right clicking)

When I right click on programs (.exe) Explorer.exe crashes, here is the error report

    Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.6001.18000
    time stamp 0x47918e5d
    faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000
    time stamp 0x4791a7a6
    exception code 0xc0000374
    fault offset 0x000b015d
    process id 0x1748
    application start time 0x01c8fcc5ff901a50.

SO, what can i do to fix this?

(Problem has spread to another computer, Virus, or just bad updates??)

    Please help!!

    Thanks in advance,

    Ender

    Re: Need to fix ntdll.dll

I would be tempted to run online AV scans, CCleaner, spybot and then re-apply the SP1 update assuming you know your hardware is good.
If it has spread to another computer then the first 3 sound more likely though.
    cheers

*please note, those things in italics are just there as thoughts! )

      Trust me,

I have run EVERY scan I can think of,

      Nothing finds anything.

      Wait...

      Let me rephrase that...

      Everything finds nothing

      Hmm...

      3rd time's the charm

Every scanner shows my computer is clean.

      There.

        Re: Need to fix ntdll.dll

Is it just on *.exe that explorer crashes?
If so it might be worth looking in the registry and seeing what is called up under that *.exe entry, I've not had much experience with this so forgive me if i'm wrong here.

Process Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896645.aspx) might be good in helping you track down the exact problem too.

        Regards,

          Re: Need to fix ntdll.dll

The problem is not in Explorer, but one of the DLLs it calls on, ntdll.dll.

Also, the problem seems to be spreading more. anyone out there have a similar problem? (to find out, open cmd.exe in an administrator account, then type *without quotes* "net user administrator /active:yes" If it says "the command completed..." you are fine BUT if it says somthing with Error 5, you are SCREWED.

at this point, i am declaring my current install to be bricked

Can you give a little more information about your system?

What OS and version are you using?
            What is your hardware?
What other software have you got installed?
(You mentioned that it has spread to another system, how are they connected? can you provide more informaiton about the effected systems?)
How is the problem spreading more?

Have you looked at the following websites?
            http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixthe...a/ntdlldll.htm

              Re: Need to fix ntdll.dll

What OS and version are you using? Windows Vista Home Premium

              What is your hardware?

              Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
              3 gigabytes of ram
Video Card NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT

What other software have you got installed? AVG free, drop box, no other things that could affect this

(You mentioned that it has spread to another system, how are they connected? LAN can you provide more information about the effected systems?)

How is the problem spreading more? There are now 2 computers that have this problem.

And i am trying diabling DEP on explorer.exe

The reason I have said this is that when you open the context menu (right click) explorer calls up context menu handler (basically Open, Run As, Scan etc) and if there is an error with one of them it might cause problems.

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm has a nice article about how to find the root of this problem. It uses ShellExView which is available from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html, the software is freeware.

                -----------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for providing additional information.

Are the additional 2 systems similar to the original?
do they run a different OS/programs?
Are the running on similar hardware?
Do you have the firewalls enabled on the ethernet connections?

What Service Packs are they using?

As for your program list it can be the strangest of things that will affect the system, I've found that Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath v1.01 patch has previously caused a similar problem. (this had a problomatic registry entry here: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\ContextMenuHandl ers\CmdLineExt]
@="{F0407C3D-349C-42B9-B83E-821E31623DF9}" ) (I am only referring to this as with a GeForce 9600 GT, I am thinking that you are probably playing games on them)

                ----------------------------------------

When you said try "net user administrator /active:yes" was this in an attempt to run SFC?

                ---------------------------------------

                Have you read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833?

Hope some of the information here will help you,

                Regards,

                      Most likely.
btw, most of my information was found using ... it is your friend.

To solve this use ShellExView and disable an entry with {F0407C3D-349C-42B9-B83E-821E31623DF9}, I believe it is something to do with SecuROM context menu.

As I'm not there please use caution in what you're disabling, you don't want to cause more problems.

more research shows that it is a SecuROM problem. I am unsure if there is a sure fix at the moment but it seems that when some certain games are run the same problem may occur again, you can use "regsvr32 /u cmdlineext.dll" to unregister the DLL, however I would expect a proper fix for this problem in the future, it might be worth contacting SucuROM to see if they have a better solution,

                      Regards,
