  • Back-up what important files...Pls?

I want to backup all my important files and do a fresh install for many reasons and my question is:

I don't know if I've got this straight or not.

    Excel files= .eml
    Document files= .doc
    Text files= .txt
my camera images only uses= .jpg
Address book= .wab or .csv backup?
    mail files= .dbx

This is what I remember from XP but is Vista the same and am I right??
    Later!!

Excel files are .xls -- .eml is mail messages

Given the low price of drives, consider removing the old drive, installing vista on a new one, then mounting the old drive as a secondary (or external) drive and copying back what you need

If you do back up, consider:

Documents, pictures etc. (should all be in "My Documents)
    Ditto for different users
    Internet Favourites
    Mail Messages and settings
    Fonts
    Application settings, templates etc.
    Downloaded files
The list goes on and on.....

Yeah as mentioned before, it will not cost you much to add more storage.
You can execute the following application to help you migrate (backup) your data. From the start menu, point to run and then type "migwiz". Follow this wizard and it will help you.

Update me if more questions are needed.

You can manually backup anything you want, but Vista has a tool just for that - "Backup Status and Configuration". It will automatically backup any file type you specifiy - documents, music, pictures, email and so on.

Using Backup Status and Configuration in Vista - Backup Files and Restore Files In Windows Vista:
