  • Accessing Old XP folders via Vista: A quicker way

When I plug in my old hdd from XP Pro system - I can see all the files but cannot
access them without going through a series of hoops.

    the message I get is

"You don't have permission to access this folder....Click continue to get access to this folder" then it says " you gain access you will need to use the security tab"

and I have to go to "security tab" > "advanced" > "permissions" > click on my name ....then I can access ....

this all takes alot of time for EACH folder is there any quicker way?

Yes. Do it once for the top parent folder, take ownership of the folder and all subfolders and files, then give yourself permissions.

daniel, I change the permissions for the top parent folder but after about 3 or 4 layers down of the same folder ( there are a lot of folders) I come across the same wall ?

Take ownership at the parent folder and propogate ownership to all the sub-folders. This will give you access to all folders and files.

On the Security tab click the Advanced button, then select the Owner tab, then click the Edit button and check the box to replace the owner on subcontainers and objects after you add yourself as the owner..
