    Re: Not booting from Vista

Start all over again. Oldest OS first.
As an alternative, you can run XP in Virtual PC or vmware.

      Re: Not booting from Vista

As Marcel has said when you installed XP it overwrote the boot files for Vista with its own boot files.

I think you may get away with doing a repair on the vista installation.

Try reading through this and see if it can give you any pointers.

        Re: Not booting from Vista

sorry for the late reply guys, i kinda cheated and just re-installed Vista, then formatted the old partition, but now the problem is that when i boot, i get the option to choose which OS to boot, but XP ins't there anymore, so how do i get rid of it from the list?

On XP, normally i would right click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > click "Settings" in the "Start up and recovery" section > "Edit" and change the config script, but "Edit" does not appear in this section on Vista, so how do i change it?

          Re: Not booting from Vista

If it is anything like XP/2k3 (which it might not be) you take "read only" off the "BOOT.INI" file in the root of C:, edit the file, and remove the missing OS from it. Also you can change the timeout (if you change it to zero the menu allowing you to choose OS will never be displayed and if you want safe mode you have to be sharp with the F8 key).

But - as I say - I have no idea if it's anything like XP because I've had zero exposure to it.

            Re: Not booting from Vista

i already changed it to not display the time to Boot, but as you say, have to be quick with the f8 key

i'll give changing the boot.ini file a try when i get home

            Thanks
