  • What’s New in Windows 8.1 Update 1

Just rounded up some details about Windows 8.1 'Update 1' and posted an article about it here:

    http://www.petri.com/whats-new-in-wi...1-update-1.htm

Wondering if these updates/improvements will make people more likely to consider Windows 8? Or (like some readers I've talked to) are many just waiting until what comes next, perhaps Windows 9?

My only experience is with Server 2012 which has been maddening.

Several of our staff are using personal laptops with Windows 8 and they unanimously dislike it.

We have recently purchased a pile of replacement desktops and they will all have W7 installed. I dare not order them with Windows 8 - considering the present view of W8 and the staff experience we will quite happily wait for a GUI that is tailored to 'traditional' computer use.
A recent poll suggests that 6 out of 7 dwarfs are not happy

I'd wager that sometime between now and the release of Windows 9 (or whatever Microsoft decides to call it) we'll see a legitimate start button reappear. Businesses aren't adopting Windows 8 very fast, and consumers aren't upgrading across the board either.

I'm using Windows 8.1 Enterpise on my company laptop and once you get passed the initial changing of things to the way you like it its actually pretty decent.

All the apps that I need on a daily basis work perfectly so no issues for me.

Will be interesting to see the new update.

Yeah - if I was to use it regularly I'm sure I'd be fine with it, but most of our staff like the system to simply work. Doing really weird things like sticking 'Shut Down' in 'Settings' is not intuitive and does not help. I have got used to doing what I need to do with 2012 but I have not explored it.

Have to agree about Server 2012, why they ever thought it was a good idea to stick in the ModernUI is beyond me.

Been using 8 pretty much since it came out, firstly on a Dell E4310 laptop which ran it fine although the lack on Start Menu and Boot to Desktop was very annoying. Now using a Surface Pro and the ModernUI is much better to use with touch but I still prefer desktop apps to be honest.

The good thing, unlike Vista, is that I still haven't found a Windows 7 app that won't run on 8. Lack of application compatibility was what really killed Vista IMO.

This I have to agree with. why not have a server with just the GUI portion and all the management is done from a client. Ohh wait they do. Its called Server core LOL.
