  • Windows 8 PPTP VPN Issue

Win 7 PPTP VPN connections is working fine for accessing servers through remote desktop (RDP) and accessing file server through RUN (\\172.16.1.100).

Win 8 with the same PPTP VPN configuration, the connection is working fine. I can access remote servers through remote desktop (RDP).

BUT when I am trying to access my file server through RUN (\\172.16.1.100) its giving me error “An unexpected error to network occurred”

    Please help me.

    Thanks,

    Ab

Do you get the same error if you use \\servername (assuming lmhosts is properly setup) or \\servername.domain.com?

You could also try flushing the DNS resolver:

    ipconfig /flushdns

Can you check with ipconfig, what you get when you connect with the VPN on Windos 8?

Thanks for response. I have just build new machine and i am using IP for access server (172.16.x.x).
        I can ping remote network.
I can access servers through remote desktop application.
But i can access servers \\172.16.x.x.
this is happening with windows 8 only with the same configuration of PPTP VPN.

        I need you expert advice.

        Thanks.

Check your firewall on the Win 8 clients.

What OS is the VPN server? Also, does the file server have a static IP?

            Firewall is turned off.
            Ipconfig /flushdns done.
Using Watchguard Firewall as VPN server.

Note. Its proper working on Windows 7.

Re: Windows 8 PPTP VPN Issue

I'm not familiar with Watchguard technologies but assume there is a way of collecting logs for diagnostic purposes.

The error you are getting can sometimes be attributed to no connection to the Internet/network. I'm wondering if there is something that is causing the device to drop those particular packets that have UNC destinations from your Win8 machines.

I asked about the file server's IP address because I have come across situations where 'static' IP addressing is achieved through DHCP reservations, but when a static address is manually assigned to the adaptor the DNS server still resolves the address to the reserved one. But, as you say, this would have affected the Win7 clients also, so ignore that....

Re: Windows 8 PPTP VPN Issue

On the Watchguard, do you see the Win 8 machine make a successful connection over PPTP?

Are you using the same user on both the Win 7 and Win 8 computers?

What firmware version are you running on the Watchguard?
