  • Using Windows 7 OEM image to deploy into OEM licensed workstations (Dell/HP)

    Hi All,

Can anyone share your experience here or at least provide some advice before i begin company wide deployment of WDS into my workstations.

I've got brand new HP desktop which comes with OEM Windows 7 Pro Media, does this means i can create base and capture image with the Windows 7 OEM image for this deployment ?

    eg:
Dell/HP Windows 7 Pro OEM will be deployed on HP/Dell laptop/desktop
because i couldn't get the bare metal workstation without OS install on it.

my understanding is that the OEM image will be licensed already on the physical machine and also from compatibility point of view, the DVD which comes with the HP/Dell is already tested with them, therefore I'm thinking that getting one single license of Windows 7 Enterprise might be useless since this image is not being used by anyone else on the server.

If anyone can clarify this matter with the supporting document then it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    AWT

Unless you have a Volume License Ageement with Microsoft you may have licencing issues. OEM versions are tied to the Motherboard of the machine it is installed on. (If the M/B dies and is replaced, then you are required to purchase a new copy of Windows 7 if you wish to install that O/S onto that machine again)

If you try to use the Enterprise version to create your "master image" then the Win 7Pro OEM keys will not validate the Enterprise version.

How many workstations do you have to image?
Is this a business or educational location?
Do you have a VLK from Microsoft?
      1 1 was a racehorse.
      2 2 was 1 2.
      1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
      2 2 1 1 2

Before I give my take on this, I strongly recommend you confirm it with your licensing specialist, whether that's HP or Microsoft. Licensing is far from an exact science.

As I understand it, and was informed by Dell when in a similar scenario, the media is incidental in an OEM environment. The COA attached to the machine is the license, even though the key on it is usually a dummy. Therefore you may create a WDS image from OEM media and deploy it to all machines that you purchase with a corresponding COA.

Once again I re-iterate, I was given this information by Dell and it was confirmed by our MS Partner licensing contact, but you should still check with HP and MS to ensure you are legal.
