  • cannot format disk before installing xp

    HI,
I formatted my h.d and wanted to clean install xp pro (i had the same o.s before).
When i try to install again i am promped to format the h.d but the messeage i get is the setup was not able to format the disk and cant proceed with the installation.
I formatted the disk through third party programs so why cant i format it through setup?
    Thanks,
    Bendi

Re: cannot format disk before installing xp

when you formated it the first time what file system did you use (NTFS, FAT32, FAT, etc...)?
Also make sure you understand what it means to format your HD, as you dont really need to do it twice. (Hint: it is not the same as reinstalling XP Pro)

What 3rd party program did you use?
      1 1 was a racehorse.
      2 2 was 1 2.
      1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
      2 2 1 1 2

Re: cannot format disk before installing xp

First, I hope you have a seagate brand HD.
Since you already finished that operation you know that your HD is completely blank (that was probably intentional )
Now when you go to install XP there will be, all these blue screens with different options. Choose accordingly, for a complete reinstall. when you get to the formatting question, format it (NTFS) but not the quick format. This will take a long time, depending on the capacity of your drive, go have a coffee.
          Let us know.

Re: cannot format disk before installing xp

Just a quick explanation regarding installing and formatting. Formatting prepares the HD from use. Installing xp is done on top of an already formatted HD, However during installation you will see an option to format, that really is just a convenience to you, and not related to the installation. Hope that helps.

Re: cannot format disk before installing xp

              Its not an option!
I cant choose during the installation if to format or not.
If its optional please guide me where can i choose not to format.
              Thanks,

How big is this hard drive and what version of XP do you have?
Have you tried formatting it on another working PC?

Again, what disk do you have.

Ok, back to the good old dos....

                    Make a boot disk
                    Start from bootdisk

                    Run from the prompt: Fdisk
                    Remove all partitions
Try booting XP CD and continue from there. DO NOt make a quick format because you've screwed something up

If that doesnt work do this from the fdisk utility.
                    create new partitions
                    make as primary or boot

                    quit fdisk
                    go back to dos
                    Format c:
