  • XP wont boot!

    Hi guys.

On one of my computers i have got windows xp home and when turning it on it goes to a screen:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or currupt:
    \windows\system32\config\system"

What is the best way to fix this without loosing data stored on the HDD?

    Any help would be great!

    Matt

      Re: XP wont boot!

Ask around friends for a loan of a Bart PE CDROM- hopefully with tools like System Commander.
With this you will be able to boot the PC, and run HDD diagnostics, file repair/recovery.

Running "repair" from WinXP CD will fix things, but can cause a real headache by messing up other installed software - and if your HDD is failing - it wont be much help for long.

check that your partition is NTFS- FAT is too unstable for WinXP (IMHO)
