  • Workgroup file sharing windows xp pro

I have a most frustrating problem with file sharing on a home network. I have several computors mostly running either Windows XP pro and home edition. On one machine, the one I use for broadband internet access I have a problem in that all other members of the workgroup are denied access to the shares.

I have tried simple file sharing and level 5 file sharing. On the offending machine I can see open sesions on the computer management console but still access is denied (can't even view the folders).

To date I have deinstalled Norton internet security, reinstalled windows all to no avail. To my knowledge, it has never worked on this machine. Origionally it ran windows xp home but was recently upgraded to professional.

I have checked all microsoft help pages and checked and rechecked all settings. I feel that there is a problem with the registry but this is just a gut feel

I would greatly appreciate any advice or help

    Hi lorenzo,

Did you checked the exceptions on the Windows firewall? Is there files and print sharing service as an exception on that machine?

Also you can define some local users in Local Users and Groups on that machine and try to access shares again.
Also you can check the administrative shares on that machine especially ($IPC).

I hope this may help you.

      Thank you Calin,

I have done the first two but not checked ($IPC). I will try that and let you know if it changes anything.

        Calin,

The ($IPC) already appears in the shares. I had already disabled the firewall and opened port 445. Any other thoughts?

What does "denied access to the shares" mean? Any errors etc?
Can you ping the machines in your workgroup?
How are they getting their IPs?
Can the other PCs access the Internet?
Can you map a drive to the SHARE? Use IP and SHARE name.
Do you have a common user account and password on each PC in your workgroup?

Re: Workgroup file sharing windows xp pro

What does "denied access mean [/B] - when I view workbook computers from all other machines on the network, I see the icons as normal, however when I click on the icon for the offending computer i get an error message that reads "// office is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissons. Access is denied."

Yes I can ping all computers - both ways.

Yes, all computers can access the internet.

No, I cannot map a drive, I get the same error message as above.

Yes, I have common user accounts and passwords.

This a is permissions problem for that (those) folders/files. Are all PC logging on using the same username? If individual logon names, try adding a user account to the offending PC an then give them Full Control of that folder. Reboot both PCs involved and then try accessing the folder again.

How many PCs in your workgroup?
