You would create a vanilla build with all your apps etc, etc, etc done.

Create an answer file with all the relevant details

You would then use SYSPREP to clear the SID's, etc from the machine.

Create an image of this using something like Ghost.

Voila 1 completed build ready for installation.

    More info on SYSPREP here

Sorry, but I am a bit confused. Are you trying to make a "restore" image so if your PC dies (assuming HDD) you can replace the installation, applications etc by copying the image from the bootable CD/DVD back to the repaired PC?
Or, are you trying to make a bootable CD/DVD that can be deployed to another hardware platform if your present system dies?
Be advised that if using an OEM version of XP you could run into licensing issues changing hardware platforms and you can also have difficulties booting if the motherboard (especially chipset) is different to the original.

Or are you talking about a bootable live windows CD/DVD?

              ok,

Do you want use diskimaging (Ghost with sysprep for example?)
Do you want an unattended install? (http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/)
Do you want to slipstream patches and sp's only? (http://www.nliteos.com/)
              Do you want to RIS?
Do you want a live running XP on CD/DVD? (see comment Wired)

              What is you're final goal?

                hello
                May I join the discussion?
                I got a similar problem
I got some similar PCs , all with their own Xp home disk with its s.n, so there is no llegal problem.
Is it possible to ghost one of them with all the third party programs and to ghost back the image to the other pc's? (No problem to transfer an image to them) and if yes, how?
( I know i'll have to change the s.n afterwards)
                Thnks

Re: Operating syatem image with preinstalled thirdparty tools ??

If the hardware is the same then you shouldn't have problems. By using SYSPREP you will need to enter XPs S/N when you reboot after imaging.
