    I notice all the time that some files get compressed and I never compress them my self. Does XP do this on its own. And if so how do you stop it. I have checked for virus and stuff so what else could it be.

    To answer your question as simply as possible, YES.

    To turn off this PITA (pain in the ...) run "%SystemRoot%\System32\cleanmgr.exe" change the options for compressed files to like 365 days.

    This seems to do the job for me...

    And while your at it clean out the rest of that junk.
