  • WU error 0x8DDD002 in IE, 0x80070005 in log

Windows Update displays the following error on the WU web page:

    Code:
    Error number: 0x8DDD0002

To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on
as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group.
If your computer is connected to a network, network policy
settings may also prevent you from completing this
    procedure.
KB article #316524 precisely describes the issue but doesn't solve it.

The WindowsUpdate log contains a number of 0x80070005 errors -- as fas as I know, they signify 'access denied', i.e. issues with incorrect permissions. It starts with an error involving 'wuredir.cab':

    2006-01-12 10:52:28+0100 808 33c SusExtractFiles for target C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir\9482F4B4-E343-43B6-B170-9A65BC822C77\wuredir.cab failed with error 0x80070005

    2006-01-12 10:52:29+0100 808 33c Failed to obtain cached url with hr = 80070005.
    2006-01-12 10:52:29+0100 808 33c Failed to upload events with hr = 80070005.
The KB article focuses on potential issues with

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate

    and the

    %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder.

I tried to set those to full ctrl / read access for everyone. Checking on it with AccessEnum showed the new settings didn't stick. So I tried again, and now they seem to be OK. No joy with WU though.

I've been advised to install MS Update instead of visiting the website, but ironically I can't get there either because of the error. In case I don't get this resolved any time soon, what other methods are there on XP Home machines to get automated OS updates ?

      SOLVED - delete %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder

Deleting the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder in safe mode

was pretty close to the last thing I'd decided to try before wiping the drive - although I *had* seen someone else reporting success doing this where all else had failed. I just wasn't particularly comfortbale with it. WU then proceeds to re-apply every single patch since SP2.. but hey, I am not complaining.

So yeah, put me down as problem solved by elective surgery.

Hope this helps someone down the road.

          delete SD folder

You're welcome. I should give the path for the SoftwareDistribution folder as %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution as %sytemroot% has replaced Win 9x's %windir% as an environment variable in 2k/XP.

You can also do this from the command line as follows:

          net stop wuauserv
          net stop bits
          net stop cryptsvc

          rmdir /s /q %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
          mkdir %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution

          net start wuauserv
          net start bits
          net start cryptsvc
There's a little freeware app out there that will do precisely this for you: Dial-a-Fix.

Just click on the 'flush SoftwareDistribution' button. Dial-a-fix offers a whole battery of other potential fixes also. Recommended. Just make sure you get the latest version from the author's website as there was a bug with that specific functionality in a previous version (0.56).
