Use a firewall like Kerio or ZoneAlarm to put your computer in stealth mode.

OR, remove the blue cable from the back of your computer.

Interesting suggestion, but if the connection is wireless pulling the plug won't make the computer invisible.
And if the connection is wired, your solution is not compatible with:

I think a software firewall configured to stealth mode is a better idea.

                    Re: forewall

Why do you want to hide a client IP in a LAN enviornment??

Is the LAN serviced by DHCP as it is easy enough to check that for an IP.

                      Re: forewall

Put Sygate in stealth mode. This option is only available in the pro version. If you want stealth mode for free, use Kerio or ZoneAlarm.

This will make you invisible to pings and port scans. The network administrator will still be able to detect you, and so will any computer when you initiate a connection.
