  • unable to disable another LAN connection

    Hi,

I have a PC whose motherboard has two built-in LAN connections, one wireless connection. It is running on XP Pro SP3. Currently, I am using only one LAN connection, and hence, I was trying to disable the other LAN connection (that has status "network cable unplugged") and the wireless connection.

The problem I have is when I was trying to disable the other LAN connection, I received an error message as follow

"Error Disabling Connection- It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may have one or more protocals that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or system account."

I was wondering if there is a work around for this issue. It's driving me mad at the moment.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance

I don't know if it is advisable to do this, so please research it first - how about uninstalling the protocols from the device before disabling?

        Thank you for your replies.

The way I disabled the LAN connection was on the Network connection under Control Panel. I then right clicked on the unused LAN connection and clicked "Disable" option. I got the error message after that.

        Thank you in advance

Hi, just create a restore point before you proceed,
also you should be able to disable onboard network cards in the bios.

Any particular reason why you need to disable this NIC?

Thank you all for your replies.

I do not have any particular reasons as to why I want to disable the other connection. But one thing that made me do it is that I have a very strange issue here.

In the windows security center under control panel, it shows the firewall is on when it is set to Off in the windows firewall. No matter what you choose in the windows firewall whether it is On or Off, the firewall in the windows security center shows it is on. It is as if there is another firewall running in the background but I have checked against the processes in the task manager to see if there are any suspicious programs running but to no avail.

I have also run malwarebyte a few times but detected nothing. I have also tried to reset the windows firewall by going to the DOS command and typed in "netsh firewall reset" but to no avail.

I wonder what else I should try to be able to find out which firewall is running.

Note: I have not yet tried to disable it through BIOS. I am using the basic ethernet protocol here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

                Thank you

Check the configuration on the AVG Firewall.

                        Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I have checked it and have even tried to have the AVG firewall disabled completely. And guess what... it still shows firewall is on in the Windows Security Center.

                        Any ideas?

                        Thank you in advance

Uninstall AVG and see what happens.

I've never not been able to disable a NIC when i needed to.

What happens when you disable the Windows Firewall Service using Start>Run>Services.msc and restart the computer?
