  • XP Pro Install Issue

Attempting to reinstall XP Pro on the Dell X1 Laptop. BIOS has been set to USB to recognize the HP external CD drive. Boot goes straight to Windows Desktop. When BIOS is set to CD system still goes straight to Windows desktop. Looking for the solution that allows install.

I have seen downloads that assist USB install of XP but Microsoft says that it is not endorsed. Not ready to try that yet. Guidance sought

USB CD drives are always problematical
See if there is a BIOS upgrade to handle it properly, or consider booting from a floppy with CD support

Plus, there should be a Function Key to press during the POST that will allow you to choose which device you want to boot from. Could be F10 or F12

Dell is usually F12 for selective boot.

It must boot from CD as thats how you would recover the system. It has no slots to use a CD internally lol.

        Is your media definately bootable???

I'm with Tom's suggestion though of getting a USB floppy and bootable flopy disk with USB and CD support and running the install from that.

There used to be 6 floppies that yoou could download to install windows from floppy for XP.
