  • Decrypting Files - lost key

    Hi All,

    someone pls help!!! i used to have a Lenovo laptop with XP OS in it and which i was using Lenovo laptop i have encrypted all the data and transferred the files to an external hard drive, but now i have upgraded my laptop and without decrypting the entire data. Now when i try to use those files or copy them back to my new laptop it is not allowing me to access any of those files

    i am now using Dell Inspiron 1564 on Windows7, external hard drive is segate160gb

    No can do I am affraid unless you can get hold of the decryption keys.
    What method did you use to encrypt the data?

      Assuming it is Microsoft EFS encryption, and you havent exported the certificate and kept it safe (or set up a recovery agent and kept a copy of their certificate), I'm afraid you've lost them all.

      Even 3rd party tools require access to the original SAM database

      Yet another reason NEVER to use EFS

        i have selected encrypt option from the file properties itself.

          That's EFS encryption
          Sorry, but you're out of luck
