  • Windows XP machine takes about 3-7 minutes to logon

    Hi All,

I have a client who reported an issue. He takes about 3-7 mints to login to the domain. It seems his screen gets stuck at "Applying settings"
I asked him to enable verbos logging for userenv .

He sent me the result: The txt file is too large in size to attach here:

anybosy willing to help, I will send it to there mail so that they can have a look

Can anyone help me in finding out the root cause?

    Thank you in advance....

      Hi Swapneel,

The DNS configuration is correct. I checked it. It is having the correct ipaddress and pointing to the correct DNS Server

        Try
nslookup its resolving proper name !

Check All Startup as well Via "msconfig"

          Hi Swapneel,

I do not think this is a DNS issue at all because I checked everything and it seems to be fine.

I think this has to be something related to GPOs but I am not sure.
Can I send u the userenv log that I have. Can you take a look at it?

Re: Windows XP machine takes about 3-7 minutes to logon

Although the verbose log is "too large to attach", can you please take the time to remove the "routine" items (perhaps by comparison with a log from a "normal" machine) and then post the rest for us to look at?

Is the problem machine at a site without a local DC?
Can it resolve a DC by name and fqdn?
Is it getting an IP by DHCP or manually set? -- either way, can you post an IPCONFIG from the machine and from a DC

                  Hi Ossian,

                  Thanks for the reply

The machine has got a local DC in its site and it can resolve the DC by FQDN

Please give me some time to post the truncated verbos log as I have to compare the client's one with that of mine and I have not done it before(ie.. look at such a log)....

here is the ipconfig /all result

Re: Windows XP machine takes about 3-7 minutes to logon

Your IP configuration looks very odd as everything is in totally different subnets. Are they in the same site?

Can you do a plan of your network showing routers, servers, sites etc with some IP addresses

                      Hi Ossian,

Yes, everything is in the same site , The machine, the DNS server and the DHCP server...

A small doubt, can this be because the policies are taking time to be applied on that system while it is logging on to the domain?

Re: Windows XP machine takes about 3-7 minutes to logon

If they are all on the same site, is there any reason (tbh I cannot think of one) why the client is on a separate subnet to the DHCP and DNS servers (and the 2 DNS servers appear to be on separate subnets themselves)?

                        Specific questions:
Is DHCP via a windows server or router? What is the IP and subnet of it?
                        Ditto for DNS servers?
