My step dad has a sony vaio desktop with windows xp sp3....he is unable to connect to the internet even though his LAN states that his connection is connected I am posting the command lines results that I just got bout an hour ago....aside from whats on the command line i have also tried to flushdns and reboot then release and renew then reboot and serveral other things but nothing seems to work....i am also posting the netdiagnostics from the help and support section....I no longer have the CD to re-install the windows and I'm really trying to avoid having to do so because there is so much on that computer and it would take my stepdad days to go through everything and save it to his external hard drive....someone PLEASE HELP!!! My older brother who is my own personal geek squad can't even figure it out so now I'm stuck and praying someone on here can help....

No need to reinstall windows -- everything looks as if its performing as it should EXCEPT for DNS

I think you need to check if the DNS server addresses are correct, also check if your router will act as a DNS server itself -- obviously it is DHCP server

What is the make and model of router?

Pinging the DNS IP seems to work ok.
What happens when you ping www.google.com?
      1 1 was a racehorse.
      2 2 was 1 2.
      1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
      2 2 1 1 2

Re: Step dads computer is completely retarded

try pinging google's ip address 209.85.231.104 and check the response. If it pings then on a windows browser try opening a website.

If it is not resolved then try with IP address. Also try few other browser's except IE.

Also did you try to connecting to Internet in Safe mode with networking ??

i've checked the router settings from my laptop because i'm unable to do so from his computer and the only thing i had to change was his security and that was because i had unplugged everything checked all the wires and ports to make sure everything was ok and then reset both the modem and router

Try setting the DHCP server on the router to issues its IP address as the DNS server and allow that to send the DNS requests to the internet.

There are a couple of things you may want to try.

                              One is to reset tcp.

You can do this by clicking start then run and typing cmd, click ok.
Now type the command "netsh int ip reset C:\resetlog.txt" (with out the quotes)

                              Restart the computer.

You can also try using a different set of DNS Servers, try
                              208.67.222.222
                              208.67.220.220

these are from opendns.com and are free to use. The only issue I know of with them would be if he is using a satellite connect for his internet they will not work correctly.
