  • Windows XP Services Pack 3 Setup Failing

I am having a very stange issue with installing SP3 on XP. The machine has XP Pro SP2 currently installed. We are trying to upgrade to SP3 as a program they use is reliant on it. Anyway the issue we are having is that it seems to cancel itself halfway through, it gets to backing up registry, dissapears and then an error message appears saying that the setup was cancelled.

    Any help would be great....

How are you installing SP3? The SP .exe or the .iso file?
As a user or as an Administrator?
Are these stand-alone machines or Domain Members?
Are you manually applying SP3 or via a GPO or WSUS?

Still unsure how you have logged onto the machine.
        • Logon to the local machine [This Computer] as the local Administrator and try again.
        • Logon to the machine [on the Domain] as the Domain Admin and try that option.
        • Download and use the SP3 ISO and see if that works. Use Daemon Tools (pre version 4) or Magic Disc for a Virtual DVD/CD.
        • Last option, manually extract the file from SP3 and install from there.
Never tried installing an SP from Safe Mode. Can it be done successfully?Ooops, I never asked, what errors were in the Event Viewer about this?

SP3 cannot be installed in Safe Mode as far as i'm aware.

Sounds like a rights issue to me though.

What do your event logs say about the installation aborting??

Re: Windows XP Services Pack 3 Setup Failing

There was nothing in the event viewer regarding this, which i found really bizarre.

I Logged on to the local machine [This Computer] as the local Administrator and tried running the .exe. I don't think it has anything to do with the file either as we use this exe to install SP3 on many machines.

              Never sen that before then.

Usually if the SP fails to install, like it does with a rollback, it logs someting in the event logs.
