  • Slow Shared NAS device access

    Hi All,

I have D-Link DNS323 shared storage it has dual SATA hard disk and network interface (Gigabit) that i connect to the switch for my office use, the problem is that it is very2 slow to the point that i have to restart it again.

i access it using \\sharedName method and don't know if it is just ordinary NFS or Samba protocol (it doesn't ask for password).

and even worse for Windows Vista and 7 users that shared folders is not available at all ?

Any clue and help please ? I've upgraded into v.1.07 firmware.

    Cheers,

if you use \\hostname\share chances are it's an SMB device.

do you have user accounts created on the device at all ?
Are your disks 7200 or 5400 RPM ?
what is your folder structure like ?
Is it slow to retreive files, or slow to list files ?

yes it is slow in all operations.

the structure i simple 270 GB but of course with several hundreds thousands of files (one directory called icons got 16 GB worth of icons ~ 250.000+ icon files).

Oh.. that's what I'm afraid off I think that this device is supposed to be for home usage not for heavy random acces in Medium office like us now.

Maybe it hasn't been setup and configured correctly. I would suggest RTFM carefully and then blow away the setup and do it again. Keep in mind that this is a very cheap device and you do get what you pay for.

Lack of mapped drives seems to indicate that either SHARES were not created on the NAS or Permissions to the SHARES are not correct.

(The icons are always going to be slow due to the small size and overhead they produce).
