  • WINXP Cant login- no desktop

Hi I require an urgent help. I have winxp and while I
was working windows got frozen. I rebooted the
computer and now the windows desktop is not loading anymore only the wallpaper is showing.
I cant login to safe mode as same thing happens. Cant see the desktop again. I have tried network card as well as command prompt. Is anybody able to advice what I need to. I have a lot of documents on hard drive which I havent
    backed up. pls advice

Sounds like Explorer is crashing. Boot the machine up to the blank desktop and hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, got to task manager, go into processes and kill the explorer process tree. Then in task manager go to File->New Task (Run) and type explorer.exe. I've had some success with this in the past.

Also, adding on to Crauchan's advise, check the system event log for any Explorer related errors.
I had this once and a BIOS upgrade resolved it. Although, it could be several reasons it is hanging.
