  • Install Windows Xp Pro from Server

    Hello,

Is it possible to install a fresh install of windows xp pro from a server ? through lan ? - i have a netbook which has no dvd or floppy drive - i have tried looking in the bios and it wont allow me to install via USB.

The Server Is a dell Poweredge t100 - dual nic.

    Any ideas?

You can do it by setting up WDS on the server or getting hold of a USB CD drive.

        Add and remove programs>components>WDS.

You will need a boot image though which can be extracted from a Windows Vista CD. Alternatively as long as you're laptop can boot from USB just get a USB CD drive as already suggested. Seems a rather convoluted solution for what is a rather elementry job..And probably i one off i presume?

A good start would be telling us what kind of server you have. WDS is available in Windows Server 2003 SP2 (With RIS installed at SP1) or with Server 2003 R2 or Windows Server 2008. There are of course third party options such as Symantec Ghost or Acronis True Image.

Assuming your server meets the requirements have a check at this article from technet.

Not sure you can get an XP image from a Vista CD

No this is the actual boot image you require. Or rather i should say PE (Preinstallation enviroment). There is one already present on the Vista CD which can be used for installation of XP.

You only need the boot image to use WDS in Native mode though, if you use WDS in Legacy mode (effectively just RIS renamed) you only need an XP CD.

All of this being irrelevant until we know what type of server it is.
