  • Unable ping NetBios Name

    Hi all,

I able to PING the FQDN but unable to PING the machines NetBios Name.

    For example:
    Computer Name : abc
    Domain Name : domain.com

When I type "PING abc" with command prompt
    then will show
PING request could not find Host abc. Please check the name and try again.

    Next, I type "PING abc.domain.com"
then able to resolve IP address.

I had check the DNS record from Server. the host record is there.
    Had tried tried IPCONFIG /flushdns.

May I know why still unable to ping NetBios name?

    Hi all,

I had found that on my machine DNS setting.
The setting for Append DNS is set to "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)
    "qwer.com"

Will this cause me unable resolve ip address with just type NetBios name?

      Re: Unable ping NetBios Name

you could simply have netbios turned off.

the short answer to your question however, is that if you do not have 'append this domain' to your dns query, and you try to query just a hohstname, not a fully qualified domain name, then yes, it will fail.

it's because of the way dns works.

The other way you could do this is to go into computer properties, and set your computer name to actually be computer.domain.com rather than just 'computer'

you know.. there's a knowledge base article on this very site that explains how to disable Netbios... while you don't want to disable it specifically ( not necessarily anyway) - the process for checking it is exactly the same.
