  • Reinstall Remote Registry Service

My problem is that I removed remote registry from my unattend xp installation disk. Now I have several computers that need this service.

I think I know what registry keys I need. The only file that I can find that is associated with this service is regsvr.dll in the system32 directory. I have read there is a regsvc.exe but I can't find the file anywhere.

I would like to find a fix that I can deploy with active directory.

    Thanks
    Rad

    P.S. This website is great.

    Re: Reinstall Remote Registry Service

    Hi,

Two options I can think of:

    a) A script on the lines of :
    Code:
    Net start "Remote Registry"
    b) Through a GPO
    Code:
Computer Config - Windows Settings - Security Settings -System Services
Select the service you want (Remote Registry) and set it to Automatic.

    Cheers

Hmmmm I think he removed the files from the disk.
Well in that case simply recreate the unattended installation.

However I don't understand why you want to remove the services. Simply disable them is much easier.

Yes, I made the mistake of removing the files from the disk. I can recreate the disk but I have several computers that need this service reinstalled (if it's even possible). Too many computers to reinstall windows.....

Best way, and only way that I'm aware of, is to reinstall Windows. As Dumber suggested, you'll save yourself a headache in future if you just disable services rather than removing them.

If you're creating unattended installations, then presumably you're deploying images to the machines somehow, using WDS or something similar? In which case, just start it going on Friday night and it'll be done when people come back in on Monday. I expect you're deploying apps to the machines using group policy or some management product, so everything will be done for you. Nice and painless

                Re: Reinstall Remote Registry Service

The path to the exe for the Remote registry proccess in XP is "C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalService"
That means, if I am not wrong, that svchost.exe is the process responsible for running the service and that file couldn't have possibly not been installed because it's shared with other services as well.
You also mention that the Regsvr.dll is present and as far as i am aware that's the Dll needed for the "Remote Registry".
I don't know of any other files needed to run the service.
Regsvc.exe and Regsvc32.exe are used to register or unregister OLE controls (Such as .Dll) as far as I'm aware, so they are not specifically linked with "Remote Registry".

Is the service listed on the Services list at all?
What happens when you try problematic machines?
                Code:
                Net start "Remote registry"
                on the

Maybe, any of the scripting Gurus can have an Input on the matter to see if it's even possible to integrate the above with maybe (If it's even needed)
                Code:
                Resvc32.exe /s Regsvr.dll
IMHO Reinstalling and redeploying should be the last option if everything else fails, unless of course the Time factor is the most important one .
