  • Changing CD-key, MSDN-key to Volume licensing?

    Hi.

I had Win XP Pro installed trough our network at my company. After running it for a few month I'm recently run into problem and decided to run a Windows repair. If I had rerun the network install I would have lost all data so I decided to take a XP-cd from my MSDN Universal subscription to run Windows repair. The MSDN XP-CP did not accept our Volume Licensing Key so I had to use the MSDN key for the installation but I don't want to use one activation for the MSDN-key so now after the repair I want to change the MSDN-Key to our VL-key.

When using msoobe.exe I get the message Wrong CD-key (in Swedish) and when testing any scripts or solutions that I fond on this site I only getting error messages and the key doesn't change.

Is it possible in any way to change from MSDN-Key to VL-key?
If not I have to save all my data, rerun the network installation and then install all my applikations again.

    Thanks in advance

      To change you key.

      1 Create a restore point.

2 Edit this value in the registry
      HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrent Version\WPAEvents
      under OOBETimer change the value
      No reboot yet....

      3 from run
      %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

4 in the Lets activate window select activate by phone and then next.

5 there should be a button that says "Change Product Key" Click it

      6 enter new product key.

7 Close window and restart to try out.

Does this only work with XP or are other OS's supported? And is there a KB article about this?

It was only tried on XP when a friend of mine had a problem with an Xp cd.

I found this a while back on some other forum and just took some notes for later use.

As I wrote in my original question (using msoobe.exe) I allready tryed this but I only getting the error info wrong CD-Key, and yes I have checked the key and it's our volume licensing key I trying to change to.

Have tryed it but only getting error message.

It's probably some product code that differs between the MSDN XP version and our Volume license version.

You may have to do an inplace upgrade with the vl cd.

                    Can anyone confirm this please?

If I remember corectly you cant interchange cds because cd keys are embeded into some files on he cd.

You can't change a Technet / MSDN key to a volume licence key. You need the correct media for that... believe me i've tried!
