  • Installation of Win 2000 on machine already with XP

I have XP Pro SP2 installed on my desktop on the C: Partition.

I wanted to install Win 2000 onto an external drive which I have connected to the desktop.

I get a message which says ".. you are attempting to install an older Application than that which is already installed , this attempt will be cancelled...." or words to that effect.

How do I install Win 2000 onto this external drive in this situation , please ?

You can't because it will try to install the initial BOOT files (NTLDR, NTDETECT.SYS etc) onto the C: drive.

As a general rule, if you're doing multiboot, install the oldest OS first.

Totally correct unless you use a boot manager. Another option is to install a virtual copy using Virtual PC 2007. Works very well.
