  • Can not open C: drive properly

I am having a problem opening C: drive by double clicking it, instead of getting inside the drive it gives me that menu which I need to choose a program from the list that I want to open the drive with... If I right click and choose open, it will get into the drive with no problem.

Anyone have any idea on how to fix that so I will be able to double-click and access the drive like I always have?

    Thank you

    Shay.

How are you trying to open/access the C Drive?
Have you tried holding down the Windows Key and pressing the E key? Do you get the same results?

Use the "Browse" button to find C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe - and tick "Always use this program". If that doesn't fix it I'm stuck.

Like I said, the usual double-left mouse click .

Windows Key + E works just fine, I can also right click and choose "open" and it works.

Use the "Browse" button to find C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe - and tick "Always use this program". If that doesn't fix it I'm stuck.
That Indeed opened the drive, but the option to check "Always use this program" is not available when it comes to Local Drives folders.

Any help would be appreciated .

Please make a correct screenshot of it.
Currently you are showing a .ODT file which is a extension used by open office.

Re: Can not open C: drive properly

Most likely a hidden file called autorun.inf exist in the root c:\ And the AutoRun function on your computer is enabled for Fixed drives.

The file it tries to open is "my_test_document.odt"

When you open Explorer and right click c:\ do you see a menu option "Auto Run" ??

To check if there is the autorun.inf file in c:\ and an option to delete it is:

            Start / Run: CMD.exe /c, Del /A /F /P "c:\autorun.inf"

(Just to be sure, run this command line also for a file named: "c:\AutoRun.exe")

Yes, but where is this icon? And, are you sure that it does still point to the drive (c:\) and not to a file?

Re: Can not open C: drive properly

Here is regkey which should fix the drive assocation if this is the problem.
However Rems could also be right about a hidden autorun.inf file.

Re: Can not open C: drive properly

I created a new autorun.inf file, placed it inside the C: drive and it worked, no reg or anything.

                Thanks.

Actually you really don't need to have an autorun.inf on any of your harddrives.

It helped though. At anyway I am now with windows Vista installed so no need for that.

Can't try it myself because like in my previous message I've moved to windows Vista and the problem is no longer a bother for me.
Might be useful for future readers though.

I want to advise you NOT to run the command provided by samirshaikh12.
The command will delete every file matching the name autorun.* also if the file is hidden, readonly or is a system file permanently from drive c: and from all folders and subfolders on it - Without any prompt for confirmation. That will be just to risky in my opinion.

Use this one to solve the described problem with the c drive:

                          - run it separately for the files autorun.inf and autorun.exe
                          - And run it separately for every folder that is having also the described problem.
