  • Sound does not work when booted to XP only

    Hi all!

I am currently running a dual boot PC using XP and Ubuntu Linux. Recently the sound stopped working when I booted to XP. Sound works perfectly when booted to Ubuntu. I have made no hardware changes, no changes to the BIOS and the sound card is integrated to the Mobo.

What I've tried so far is to remove all the drivers and remove any trace of them in the registry and then reinstalled. I've tried this twice, defragging the hard drive in between tries.

The Mobo is a Machspeed 939 and I'm using an AMD 3600 processor if that helps. I am receiving no error messages and the hardware profile says the drivers are installed and working correctly, even though the control panel for sound does not recognize a device to use for sound. Again, sound works perfectly when I am booted in Ubuntu. Sound worked perfectly in XP after Ubuntu was installed and worked for some time with no trouble. Since Ubuntu is on a linux partition, XP doesn't even acknowledge its existance.

Any suggestions appreciated! (well; any suggestions that don't include removing Ubuntu )

you try doing a system restore to a previous date that you know it was working?
What do I know, I am only 26.

Grant, I just tried to restore but I don't know if the oldest data I have takes me to a time when the sound card was working. Restore hasn't helped.

      Thanks Grant!

        Hi, desdecardo.
Please check the Event log -> System for any error regarding any problem with the sound device's driver.
Also, take a look in the Device Manager at the Sound, Video and Game Controllers. If you have a question mark in a yellow triangle on any of them, you may have found the problem.
Post back the findings, and we'll look for it from there...
(Just to be sure, the speakers aren't muted in XP, are they? And the volume is high enough ...)

Check also in Volume Control that the WAVE slider hasn't been moved all the way to the bottom (the off position) of the control.

Re: Sound does not work when booted to XP only

Sorinso; I checked to see if the speakers were muted. Fortunately, I haven't embarassed myself . There are no indicators in the hardward profile that any of the sound drivers are in trouble. If I click on the main audio driver, the window states "Driver is installed and working properly".

Biggles77; While the equalizer is active and all the sliders are set to "high", the equalizer and the sound control panel do not recognize a sound output device.

As we say in Telecom: "The trouble is leaving here just fine.". As per XP, all the drivers are installed and working correctly and the hardware plays just fine when I am booted in Ubuntu. Something appears to be preventing the control panel from recognizing that there is a sound output device. I'm going to see if I can reinstall the control panel itself.

Thanks for the help Sorinso and Biggles77!

Another idea: run dxdiag at the command prompt, let the tests end and take a look at the Sound tab. It will be nice if you could post the screenshot of that tab.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this would indicate a DirectX problem wouldn't it?

I've never used dxdiag before, but it is definitely going in my toolbox now!

Re: Sound does not work when booted to XP only

Looks like you do have a driver misconfiguration problem after all. And no, I don't think it's dxdiag's problem...
                  Things to consider:
                  1) open the Services console (Start -> Run -> services.msc) and check that the Windows Audio service is Started and Automatic. If it's not, set it like this, reboot your XP and see the results;
                  2) is a System Restore to an earlier point, in which the sound worked, an option?
                  3) can you uninstall the audio devices from Device Manager (Start -> Run -> compmgmt.msc -> Device Manager) and reboot? XP might be smart enough to reinstall the devices, it might work.

Let's go with these for now, and then we'll see...

                    Sorinso, you rock HARD!

I ran services.msc and windows audio was indeed disabled. I enabled it and rebooted and sound works!

I ran dxdiag again and this is what I got:
