  • Windows update necessity?

    Hello.

I'm planning on running a Windows update on all our workstations (around 100 machines). About 15% is W2K Pro, about 85% is XP Pro.

There are a few things I'm wondering about.

    1) Is there any site to monitor if any windows updates have bugs / causing other vulnerability? In other words - if it's worth downloading / installing the update.

    2) Apart from any potential sites in question 1), are there any other "ways" considering if updates are necessary or not? It's been about 5-6 months since we last patched all the workstations, and I'm starting to think i'ts about time we did another one.

    3) Are there still beeing released Windows 2000 Pro updates?

    4) Is it possible to implement upgrades from a domain controller or something? At the moment, the way we do it is to walk around from computer to computer and run Windows Update manually and I find it very... non professional.

    Ever heard of WSUS? http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=wsus&meta=

Have a read of the first link and then download from the second. Suggest you install it in a Virtual Server and have a play before deploying. Also be careful on what you select as there is around 34GB of downloads if you include all the drivers.

As you will read it will also update MS Office apps as well.

      1) Personally, I don't know of any specific site that does this. I am connected to some Microsoft products related technical sites, and if there are problems, they usually "float" few days after the release.
      2) It's more a "rule of thumb", something that it's Ok for me it won't be the same for you. Anyway, I tend to install the Critical and Security updates. Especially because we are an academic institution and or firewalls cannot be as tight as we (the IT staff) would want it. All the others should be installed by need. Remember Rule#1 in computing: "It is not broken, don't fix it!" So, if a specific module does not need the update, think twice before (or, DON'T) install it.
      3) Take a look at the following two articles:
      http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lif...vicepacks.mspx
      http://support.microsoft.com/lifecyc...=7274&x=15&y=8
Hope they will give you the info you need regarding the status of Windows 200 Server.
      4) Take a look at this Microsoft article that compares the different updating methods: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/wsus/bb466194.aspx . If you are in an AD environment, I would go with WSUS, like biggles said.
