  • Windows XP logs off , Can't log in

    Hi all
    I accidently deleted these values in registry while doing malware fix "manually"
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
    Shell = explorer.exe
    Userinit=X:\windows\system32\userinit.exe
    and i paid it by doing a windows xp repair.
    i was not able to log in even in safe mode or command prompt.
    it just logged me out as soon as i type my password and hit enter.
    Is there any easy fix without doing the long process of windows repair ?
    Also there's no Network (LAN connection) do edit registry remotely.
    Please drop me your suggestions ..
    Thankyou

    You could try...
    Load up the HKLM hive on another computer.
    It is located at %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\System

    To do this you have to gain access to the hard disk by booting using another method or removing the hard disk and hooking it up to another computer. There are lots of boot images out on the net google it, pick one, then grab a usb key, format it with the hp usb format tool found on hp's site. Make it bootable using the boot image you found. Then find ntfs4dos (again google this) if you are using a ntfs file system, navigate to the directory C:\WINDOWS\System32\Config, make a backup of the system hive, ie: copy system system.bak, then copy the system hive to your usb key

    run regedt32, load the hive and modify the key.

    Then of course copy the hive back to the damaged os.

    Cheers )

      hi [email protected]
      yes that's a nice idea.
      thankyou very much for the quick response.
      i booted from usb and copied the system file on pendrive and saved it as system.bak
      but how do i load it on other computer ? reged32 and do import ??
      i mean there's no such option on reged32 talking about loading registry hives.
      Thankyou very much

      p.s. i found the hp utilitiy here. http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/fi...oad/23839.html
      and i didn't have to search for ntfs4dos because the filesystem was fat32.

        In regedt32, click your local HKLM key, then file Load Hive, select your system hive, modify it, then unload the hive.

            Couldn't you just use the option Last Known Good Configuration??

                This has nothing to do with System Restore. Press F8 early during the boot process and then select Last Known Good Configuration from the list. See if that works.
                1 1 was a racehorse.
                2 2 was 1 2.
