Can I upgrade from a Intel Core 2 Duo E 6600 to a Quad Core 6600 without having to reinstall XP

    Re: CPU Upgrade

XP will only support 1 or 2 (Physical) CPUs. I believe a Quad core is seen as 4 physical CPUs.
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.
    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
    2 2 1 1 2

      Re: CPU Upgrade

Actually, XP Home only supports one processor but can use dual or quad cores with no problem.

XP Pro supports up to two processors and they can be quad cores. (it will show eight in the OS)

As for the reinstall, the word on the street is no but you might need to install a driver and/or update the BIOS.

Interesting. http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/h...multicore.mspx Looks like I have read the wrong article somewhere and I was sure it was from Microsoft and about virtual/physical CPUs.

        Thanks Jeremy.

Glad the hear the good report.
Did you have to upgrade the drivers, etc. or was it a plug and play operation?
                Regards,

Kev, where did you get the CPU and how much did you pay? (Same locations and I am looking to get something a bit quicker)
