  • IPCONFIG, NET USE, etc. do not work from cmd

    From a cmd prompt, ipconfig, net use, etc. do not work from some of my XP machines. I have double checked and the path is correct in the env variables. If I go out to the system32 folder and run them, they work. Any ideas?

    run them from the system32 folder...

    maybe you could reinstall windows.

    what i mean to say... you said on some machines? do you have any kind of folder redirection in place or GPO restricting cmd usage? what is the ratio of working cmd's to not working cmd's? does this happen on any DCs or other member servers??

    if it isnt that many, ghost that beeeaaach!

    life is too short to troubleshoot client problems. imaging takes 5 minutes if you do it physically, and a half hour over a gig net connection.

    you will spend 12 hours trying to figure out what the deal is... what sounds more cost effective?

      Have you checked your enviornment variables?

      For PATH you must have %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 defined.

      These are mine

      C:\Program Files\Support Tools\;
      C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\;
      %SystemRoot%\system32;
      %SystemRoot%;
      %SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;
      C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel;
      C:\Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere\;
      C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\

        And if you type:
        ipconfig.exe
        and
        net.exe use
        instead?
        (The %PATHEXT% environment variable contains executable file extensions that do not have to be specified for any file in a directory given in the %PATH% variable.)

        Else, search if there might be other files with the name net or ipconfig (type: .bat or .com ect) exists on the computer .

          Thanks but I'm not reimaging a bunch of machines because of this little nuisance which in this case would have come right back again. Better to learn and understand the problem then just wipe out a machine.

          Evidently a particular app left info in the end of the path that overrode the system32 instruction. I had to move the %SystemRoot%\system32 to the end of the path and that fixed the problem.

          Thanks!
