  • Account folder shows as 'Empty'?!?

    Hi,All.

I have WinXP pro SP2 and had a system crash so used Acer recovery to restore my main drive OK, but then restored a DriveImage XML backup to a 2nd HDD of my personal account folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\<MyAccountName>'.

The problem is that I can only see the contents of this directory under BartPE. But need a program that only runs in windows to copy my EFS protected documents (that I do have the password for). In Windows XP, logged in as an admin, i get the pop-up message that the folder '...is not accessible. Access is denied.'

I can access folders to other old accounts on the same recovery drive. But not this one. Is it because the new Windows setup on the main drive has the same account name? I did create a new admin account under Windows and tried again with same result.

How can I get around this to copy old documents to new account?

    TIA!!

Try taking ownership of the folder.

Since EFS is tied to the SID of the original account, not to the password, you may still have problems recovering them. Good Luck!

Give it a shot but if you've implemented EFS and you haven't exported the certificate or have a current System State backup then you might have a bigger issue on your hands like Tom has pointed out.

So, I was successful in taking ownership of the folder (thanks to JeremyW) but then I used the EFS Key (by Lostpassword.com) to try to decrypt my files with the actual password but it failed.... I have a recovered SAM file from the old system b4 it crashed bUt EFS key doesn't say how I should use it to recover the files.

Do I need to logon as ADMIN instead of an account with admin rights? I'm a bit stumped...

Re: Account folder shows as 'Empty'?!?

I really don't know anything about EFS Key but here's a site that tells you how to recover your files http://www.beginningtoseethelight.org/efsrecovery/

Certain directory backups are needed like:
              c:\documents and settings\foo\application data\microsoft\crypto\
              - private keys

              c:\documents and settings\foo\application data\microsoft\protect\
              - locks your current password to your private keys

              c:\documents and settings\foo\application data\microsoft\systemcertificates\
              - public keys (not essential to be the orginal as another valid key can be madeup)
              Regards,
