  • administrator account on laptop not renamed by GPO

I recently renamed both the domain administrator account and the local administrator account on all the machines in the 2003 AD domain by using the default domain GPO.

This worked fine except for one, my laptop, which is an XP Pro and wasn't on for a while.

Now I find the laptop still has the old administrator account and I've tried to do gpupdate but it's still not working.

    I have rebooted several times.

Any ideas why the administrator account is not getting renamed by policy?

Run gpresult in the command line and see if the policy is applied in the first place. If it is, check Event Viewer for any error messages that might explain why the policy isn't working.

thanks for that, I wasn't aware of gpresult.

It shows that the default domain policy is applied.

      In the logs:

Windows cannot determin the user or computer name (Access is denied.) Group Policy processing aborted.

This could be linked to the laptop not being in DNS (we use static bind), but other laptops are the same situation and they applied the policy and renamed the local admin account.

It seems like your laptop is not talking with the DNS as it should. I would try ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns and then gpupdate . Afterward check with gpresult what's going on.
        Keep us posted.

It could be that the computer password didn't get changed properly (or at all) since it was offline for awhile.

          I would:
          - join it to a workgroup
          - reset the computer in ADUC
          - rejoin it to the domain

See if that clears it up.

removing it from the domain and rejoining it fixed it.

            thanks!
