  • Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed - Part II

This is an extension of the http://forums.petri.com/showthread.p...2&goto=newpost .

I followed all these suggestions and still have the same problem. The primary difference between my issues and those already discussed is my system was an upgrade (legit) from Windows 2K Pro SP4 to XP Pro SP2. Everthing else seems to work fine, this is the only issue so far.

Any additional help woruld be greatly appreciated

Re: Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed - Part

      Here is everything that happens:
Go to windows update on start menu
      click on "custom" button
      receive the following message:

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

      their recommended procedure doesn't work.

If I try to upgrade to Microsoft update, I get the two next screens (Try Microsoft Update) & Review the license - then back to the same error

      Already ran Windows repair
      the wurepair.cmd script suggested,
      installed windows installer 3.1
      ran msxml3.msi
and have bigfix installed and running

      All a big

Install the New Microsoft Update Driver Files

        1. First install the newly released 'standalone' version of Windows Update Agent 3.0, v7.0.6000.374
        http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

Direct Download links:2. Now (re)install this (updated) fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

        3. Reboot.

Workaround (if the above does not work):

Change the default from Microsoft Update to Windows Update: Go to Microsoft Update > Click on Change Settings in left pane > Scroll to bottom of page > To Stop Using Microsoft Update > Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only (check). http://support.microsoft.com/kb/901037
