  • Search Crashes Windows 2000

I have a windows 2000 machine that has a unique issue. I've searched hi and low for an answer on the net and haven't come up with anything.

Logged in as a user, if you do a search, it crashes explorer. Spits out an error message but doesn't log anything in the event viewer.

Logged in as administrator, if you do a search, it does NOT crash.

    I've never see this before.

It's windows 2000 with all the updates.

Thanks for any advice you might be able to offer.

EDIT: I should add that AV is updated is scanned daily. Spyware isn't a factor but has been checked and came up relatively clean.

Logon as Administrator, delete User Profile, logoff and logon as User. What happens now?
      1 1 was a racehorse.
      2 2 was 1 2.
      1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
      2 2 1 1 2

I haven't deleted because it happens under all users just not admins.

explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

Have a look at this if you haven't already:
          http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319124

          Also look through these http://www.google.com/microsoft?hl=e...m.&btnG=Search

I will look through those, thanks for the links. I looked on the microsoft kb but when you use a title like this "Error Message When You Start Windows Explorer: Explorer.exe Has Generated Errors and Will Be Closed by Windows" it's hard to find what you're looking for because of the amount of hits that brings up.

True but the KB matches your description except for the fact that it doesn't mention the administrator caveat.
When you start Windows Explorer, or when you use the Search feature to search for files or folders and then start Windows Explorer, you may receive the following error message:
