  • Wireless Network : Files Visible to Everyone

There is an office here with about six users in it. Most are running Windows XP Pro.

The office was running a dial-up connection until a couple of weeks ago until they finally got broadband installed. So instead of getting ethernet points around this office - they chose the wireless option. Everthing is good - except one user has a problem - lets call him "Jim". Jim has a desktop and a laptop which are networked
    together using a patch cabel.

Some users in the office - when they go to "network places" can see all of Jim's files appear. Although they cannot open them - Jim is very very concerned - that some users might be able to access his confidential information. Here are the facts:

    - there is one wireless router for the whole office
    - this is not connected to his PC - he just is connected to it wirelessly for the
    purposes of internet

How do I secure his files - while at the same time allowing fileshare between his desktop and laptop?

    Any suggestions?

Easiest way I can think of at the moment is to hide his SHAREs with the $ sign. No doubt someone will have something much more clever.
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.

You pay someone $$$$ and they hide your shares

        Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

Seriously, you add a $ to the share name and it will be invisible
        e.g. \\server\share becomes \\server\share$
The only way to see it is to type in the full name in START--RUN or MAP NETWORK DRIVE

On Jim's PC, ensure that NETBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled. This will prevent users from simply browsing to his data via "My Network Places". Or tell him to remove all "Shares" from his PC and when HE wants to access data between his two PC's he can use the default shares on the drives (C$, D$ etc) as I presume he is an administrator on both his machines.

Can't Jim give permission to a single username on the domain to have access to the shared folder in the security tab of the sharing console?

                    Komatsu,

It would be nice for you to post which solution you used to solve your problem for future users.

that is one solution, but as with MS we use the least amount of administrative effort =-)

Just disable file and printing while in the network, just one mouse click and you are done...
