  • Dead Taskbar

I have run into a problem and I'll appreciate help from experts.
The Taskbar on my Windows XP installation has stopped showing any open files/folders/ application. The Quick launch part is ok as well as the info part with the clock.
Now when I minimize a program, it does not minimize to the taskbar, but just disappears. When I open the Task manager, I find the programme still running, but apart from this, I can not call up the program again.
What can be done to restore the correct setting.
This is the second time this has happened. The first time, I had to do full backup restore to get back to normal. Unfortunately I have not done a backup for quite some time so I am likely to lose a lot of updates etc. if I have to restore to old backup.
    Please help.

    Re: Dead Taskbar

    Hi.
Alt+Tab does not assist you in moving between the windows?
You might try to delete this key from the Registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\StuckRects2 and restart the computer. Your taskbar should be recreated.
Note: Whenever you deal with the Registry, follow the instructions from this Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

      Re: Dead Taskbar

I had a similar odd problem w/ quicklaunch a while back. Kelly's Korner had the stuff for me.

I found some applicable .REG or .VBS file on this page and (after backing stuff up and reviewing the script) gave it a go:

      http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

That's a bit risky so I did a search on taskbar here:

      http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/searchxp.htm

      And found this:

      http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

Looks promising -- much more promising than a risky .REG or .VBS.
      Cheers,

      Rick

I have used that on many an occasion and it works brilliantly.

        Highly recommended by me.

I downloaded the small prog. and ran it. It is unbelievably fantastic. My Taskbar was restored in seconds.
It saved me - a novice in these matters - from messing around with the Registry.
Thanks and have a beautiful day.
