  • Default printer keeps switchiong back

I noticed a weird behaviour on 1 XP Prof machine. When I assign a default printer to be let's san New_Printer the very next day when user logs back in the default printer is the Old_Printer.
The New_Printer stayes on as long as the user is logged on.

The user loggs on to the network with group policies in place. There are no policies enforcing printer setiup, and no other start up script exist. It looks like it is not being pushed from the server.

My next guess was use of mandatory profile, but I could not find NTUSER.dat or NTUSER.man anywhere in the user profile, only ntuser.pol

Any suggestion on where to look for it?
And I checked "show hiddedn files" and unchecked "hide sys files"

    Thanks

So are you using a mandatory profile now?

ntuser.dat is located in %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username% aka %userprofile%. On my computer it could be C:\Documents and Settings\JeremyW\

I'm not using mandatory profile, I want to know how was it done that the default printer keeps switching to Old_printer every time user user logs on.

        Are you using roaming profiles?
Is there any errors in the event log?

          JeremyW,

No roaming profiles and nothing in the event log. Fortunately I was able to find the cause of it, and it ended up that a software made by "First American SMS" was changing the printer.

I'm going to give them a call to see how to disable it. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

            Gotta love 3rd-party

How did you discover that it was "First American SMS"?

Let know how it turns out.
