  • I want to remove Vista;

    I want to remove D: Vista and not mess up my XP in C:\

    How can I remove Vista without damaging the XP Pro install in C: thats running fine......... I'm assuming there might be a boot issue after pulling the D: HD out of the system.

    How do you guys do it...?

    Re: I want to remove Vista;

    The simplest way would probably be to change the default OS to XP, then leave the Vista bootloader in place and pull the Vista drive
    You could edit boot.ini (I think Vista still uses it) to remove the line that refers to Vista

      I'm pretty sure Vista has an applet you have to run to edit the default boot O/S. (Can't remember what it is called) Doing the boot.ini switcheroo doesn't work (I think). Damn, looks like a Virtual Install coming up this weekend.

          For the record, Vista doesn't use boot.ini but when you choose to boot to an older OS (I can't remember the exact verbiage) it then will use the boot.ini but this is only after you select to boot to an older OS. (do you like the redundancy in the sentence, do you?)

            Hi,

            Perhaps you already know, you can change the boot behavior of Vista with the command-line tool BCDEdit.exe.
            just something to take notion of: BE CAREFUL WITH THIS TOOL!

            I had a system with XP Pro and Vista Ultimate and wanted to change the boot environment.......I ended up with nothing at all. Even repairing from the Vista DVD didn `t work out......

            There are some 3rd party tools with which you can use BCDEdit.exe from a GUI. This may help you.

            Check this out: http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1.

            Like I said: be careful.

            Success!!

                First link from Wullie's search
                1. Boot your computer in to Windows XP.
                2. Ensure you have the Vista DVD image emulated or in the DVD drive.
                3. Go to “Start” and “Run”. Type in “e:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force” (without quotes, and replacing e: with the drive letter of your Vista DVD).
                4. Restart the computer, and you will notice the boot selection menu is gone.
                5. Format the partition/drive where you had Vista installed.
                6. Remove two files (Boot.BAK & Bootsect.BAK) on your XP drive’s root folder (C:), these were backup files of your previous bootloader, now no longer useful.
                7. Optional: Restart to ensure it still works.
                8. Use your partition software to merge your partitions together.
