  • Automated user creation / profile

    Hello.

We have a client of whom they have an internal IT staff member who does pretty basic IT work there, such as create users, fix PC's, etc.

They have 2 Windows 2003 servers, 1 Exchange 2003 and one file server. It's a pretty basic environment.

This place has a high rate of people coming and leaving, the turnover rate there is unbelievable. Anyway, adding / disabling / removing users are almost a full time job there.

Their "IT Guy" handles this stuff. He wants to know if there is an easier / more automated way to set up a new user on a given PC. After he creates the user and Exchange mailbox on the server, he has to visit every workstation, set up printers, create an Outlook profile, tweak the profile, etc.

Is there an easier way to do this, so perhaps he wouldn't even have to visit the workstation? Let's say he creates the user and mailbox, and somehow chooses which PC to push this configuration to, and wa-la, when the user logs in for the first time, everything works? The big thing is the Outlook profile.

I'm thinking a nice login script would take care of the printing, obviously. But what about desktop icons, outlook profile, etc?

My mind isn't working so well today... any helpers out there?

Re: Automated user creation / profile

Many options for automating the desktop configuration.

You could look in to configuring the default user profile http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319974
Also leverage the All Users folder (%systemdrive%\documents and settings\All Users)

GPO settings would work for some things

Scripts could do it all but unfortunately I don't know much about them

    For Outlook look here http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/or...402571033.aspx
    Lots of options.

Well, like I said, there is a huge amount of turnover at this company. These machines are a few years old, and have several old profile already on them. Using the Custom Installer for Office would not help in this situation.

      Any other ideas?
