  • roaming profile desktop taking up to an hour to render

One of my clients has this ongoing issue. We thought it was a problem with the domain - so we rebuilt it from scratch. However, the problem followed even though all users, user profiles, folders, GPO's, and permissions were recreated completely new.

Network Snapshot: Windows 2003 SP 1AD Domain with Exchange. All users have roaming profiles and redirected folders. And all XP SP2 workstations use DHCP with the internal DNS scope configured properly. Have dozens of GPO's dictating all levels of access to various network resources.

My question is this - what are some "out of the box" culprits we might look at. The network infrastructure has been upgraded to Gigabit NIC"s and switches. Workstations are update via WSUS.

Basically the users log on - runs thru applying desktop settings, user settings, wallpaper displays and then the user sits there for up to an hour waiting for the icons to display and actually be able to work. The only way to beat it is to force shutdown, restart, log in and release/renew DHCP, log off and log back in again. Then everything starts normally.

Does this ring a bell for anyone?

    How many exactly?
Could you post a diagram of you AD and GPO hierarchy? (sanitize as necessary)
Are you using group policy to deploy programs?

Yes we do use GPO to assign/publish applications

Here is a snapshot of our AD/GPO structure.

If it's just happening the first time and every other time is OK, then it very well may be the software that is getting installed.

Here's an article about optimizing Group Policy.
        http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...rformance.html

And a quote from the article.
Whatís even more important than the number of GPOs processed during startup/logon and the number of settings configured in those GPOs is what the settings in those GPOs are designed to do. For example, if you configure a new Folder Redirection setting then users targeted by that setting may experience an initial delay as their folders are redirected to a network file server. Or if you assign software using a GPO then users will experience a startup delay as the new program is installed. But simple security settings or desktop lockdown settings generally donít cause excessive startup or logon delays for users.

Unfortunately once it starts happening to a workstation - it will keep happening.

Where is your system files located at?
It might be possible you located system start up file or something on a diferent server and it is now inaccessable or the script is corrupted.
Try to see if users under certain OU gets the same effect.
Look for evet logs on DCs and find out if anything is failing. or go to user's PC and open event log to see if any scripts are failing to start/locate.

            Good luck.

Implies all others are fine. How big is his / her profile (files / MB)?
              Cheers,

              Rick

Ahh yes the good old CD trick.

First thing to look at is the actual size of the users profile then create them a new one and copy the docs and such across.

I remember we had this once with a site. Everyone was using the same profile and everyone was loading CD's into this profile. When i arrived to look at it the profile was 15GB in size and they wondered why it was taking so long to logon.
