  • Append This DNS Suffixes (in order):

    Hi Guys,

I have a strange issue with one laptop (IBM X40 or that series).
The Suffixes Dissapear after connecting to wireless network.
I need those suffixes in order to connect to internet, exchange and more local resources.
I have added 2 screen shots, one that is GOOD, and one that is the situtaion after they are gone.
I can't even spread those suffixes as part of DHCP because that option does not exist. we used our HANDS to add those suffixes together with static ip to every workstation, just need to figure why the suffixes are gone on that specific important user. Any idea how to use a script to automaticlly add them? and why they are gone, i know IBM has those utils Access IBM and so..

    Before the problem :

Re: Append This DNS Suffixes (in order):

I don't know why it happens, but could you make life less manual for your tired hands and create a GPO using Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > DNS Client ?

You'd want to Enable the DNS Suffix Search List object and add the names to the suffixes field, separated by commas.

    The GPO spreadsheet says this:
    Context: MACHINE

PolicyPath: Administrative Templates, Network, DNS Client

Policy name: DNS Suffix Search List

Information: Determines the DNS suffixes to attach to an unqualified single-label name before submission of a DNS query for that name. An unqualified single-label name contains no dots, such as example. This is different from a fully qualified domain name, such as example.microsoft.com.. With this setting enabled, when a user submits a query for a single-label name, such as example, a local DNS client attaches a suffix, such as microsoft.com, resulting in the query example.microsoft.com, before sending the query to a DNS server. If you enable this setting, you can specify the DNS suffixes to attach before submission of a query for an unqualified single-label name. The values of the DNS suffixes in this setting may be set using comma-separated strings, such as microsoft.com,serverua.microsoft.com,office.micros oft.com. One DNS suffix is attached for each submission of a query. If a query is unsuccessful, a new DNS suffix is added in place of the failed suffix, and this new query is submitted. The values are used in the order they appear in the string, starting with the leftmost value and preceding to the right. If you enable this setting, you must specify at least one suffix. If you disable this setting, the primary DNS suffix and network connection-specific DNS suffixes are appended to the unqualified queries. If this setting is not configured, it is not applied to any computers, and computers use their local configuration.

Re: Append This DNS Suffixes (in order):

OK I have a suggestion - this is a workaround, I would like to work out why the problem is happening, but this may be useful:

                  1. Setup your laptop with the DNS search order as you like
                  2. Export the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters
                  3. Import those registry settings on command at logon, or have an icon on the desktop that does it.

I accept it's messy, and not as clean as I would like, so don't shoot me
                  Best wishes,
                  PaulH.

Guys, pay attention to that that inside the Parameters key there are a lot of additional settings, part of which are not needed and others can be problematic to clone... Like the Hostname ...
I think you should consider exporting only the relevant keys...

Good point Sorin. I was working on the premise that he has one laptop with the problem, so for him, exporting the whole thing would be OK, but certainly best practice is that we should cut out any stuff that's not specific to the search order.
