  • Folder has space at end of filename - cannot delete

    Hi all

A user somehow has two folders that she has in her network space which both have spaces at the end of the filename. I cannot delete them nor do that have a sharing or security tab.

They show up in cmd when doing a dir but any file operation (rename, copy etc...) comes up with a 'cannot read from source' error message.

Any ideas of how to get rid of these?

    Thanks in advance

    (a) Are you sure it's a space and not some other code with a non-displaying character? Click the folder name in Explorer, then click it again, and copy the name onto the clipboard.

    (b) Have you tried enclosing the name in quotes? Open a command prompt, and type the following:

REN "<use menus to paste name here>" folder1

Also, to make sure it IS a space, try pasting the filename into MS Word and showing it in different fonts.

Try this from the command prompt
        Code:
        rmdir \\.\<path> /s

ALT + 255 on the num pad will give you a space. Try renaming the folder at a prompt using the ALT + 255 when you need to enter the space. Does that make sense to you?

Why not do a DIR /X from a CMD box and then RD using the 8.3 name?
            Cheers,

            Rick

Rick wins! Used rd with /s and 8.3 filename and it worked!

Ah, the young people today who don't know about DOS and its filename limitations. They are now spoilt with long filenames.
