  • ipconfig node type dynamic

What does dynamic, broadcast or mixed mean when using the ipconfig /all
    command from the command prompt?

    Windows 2000 IP Configuration

    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : IBM-HELLO
    Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . :
    Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Mixed
    IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
    WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Node Type: How the machine should resolve Netbios machine names.

    Hybrid [Mixed]
Hybrid will attempt to use LMHosts file, then a WINS server, or two if a secondary one is specified, if this fails it will then make a broadcast to attempt to resolve the name.

    Broadcast
Will use LMHosts file, then broadcast only or broadcast first, and only try WINS if all else fails.

    Dynamic
Uses the setting specified by DHCP. Typical order is LMHosts file, WINS server, Broadcast.

All of these can be set as an option on the DHCP server, the option is "Netbios node type".
