  • using host file to block sites

I'm trying to test the affectiveness of using host files to block sites on a windows XP machine, I've followed the instructions provided on the internet with no success.

The intructions claim that you need to point point the site to 127.0.0.1 i.e

    127.0.0.1 @@@.com

I've tried this and it doesn't work. Is this because I'm doing it in an environment with a proxy server? I've tried testing by pointing msn.com to 127.0.0.1, when I tried browsing to this website, I still got access, I've also tried disabling the DNS Client service, clearing the browser cache and restarting, any ideas welcome, thanks guys...

    maybe a typing error.
Did you use a tab between the ipaddress and the name.

download it otherwise here and test it.

For some reasons Microsoft hardcoded some exceptions.
For these sites the trick is not working.
      One of them is msn.com
