  • Helping getting a trial copy of Win2k8 installed.

    Hey all,

I am starting to study for the Win2k8 exams and would like to install Win2k8 (or Win2k3) on my home machines in a VM so I can practice running DC Promo, etc.

I am having trouble finding a combination of my OS's/Hardware/Virtual Server that will run server 2008 (or even server 2003). Does anyone have a suggestion based on my hardware? I have looked for different combinations and can't find one that will work.

Dell Inspiron - Intel i3-550 CPU, 6GB of RAM, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

    Dell Laptop - Vista Enterprise SP2 32-bit, 3GB RAM

    Thank you.

You need a virtualization solution on your host that supports a 64 bit guest system. vmware server will do, Microsoft virtual pc will not.
I am pretty sure you can install vmware server on your Win 7 pro x64 system.
Windows server 2008R2 is always 64 bits.

      2008 Vanilla has a 32 bit version
IIRC Microsoft have some prepared VMs you can download http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/bb738372

Otherwise download (free) Server 2008 R2 HyperV edition and run x64 VMs on that

you should almost definitely be able to put vmware server on either laptop.

virtualbox is another great tool. and it doesn't require one to register for a download.

          http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

make sure you install the extension pack on each virtual machine after it boots up the first time after installing windows. that'll improve performance and will not cause you to press ctrl every time you need to leave the vm.

as far the free Server 2008 R2 HyperV edition goes, that might be a little bit hard for a beginner. it is a server core installation, meaning you won't have the usual gui. it's command line only.

Keep in mind that 2008R2 is 64-bit only and as far as I know no virtualisation solution will run a 64-bit guest in a 32-bit host

http://technet.microsoft.com/ Trial versions are available from TechNet. Better still, for a couple of hundred $$$ you can get access to a bucket load of MS software.

Google TechNet Discount Code or TechNet Discount Coupons as there is often a discount when you open a new TechNet Account. Last one I saw was 28% off. Well worth spending some time looking for a code.
